Glucosamine: Naturally Healthy Cartilage Generation for Pets

Glucosamine is an aminomonosaccharide that is involved in the ongoing maintenance of healthy vertebrate joint tissue. Like Chondroitin, glucosamine is used in the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) and stimulates ongoing production of cartilage proteoglycans. Though glucosamine is naturally produced through a reaction between glucose and glutamine, supplementing can help by skipping this high-energy reaction step, providing glucosamine that is ready for use in the creation of joint tissue.

Glucosamine supplementation is well-researched for its support of human joint health. It can provide similar support for canine and feline companions. As is the case in human studies, glucosamine is likely most effective when taken in conjunction with chondroitin. The joint maintenance activity of these two joint tissue building blocks may be further enhanced by the addition of hyaluronic acid.

Wilke Resources provides high-quality pet-oriented sources for all three of these joint support ingredients. We can help you upgrade your existing product or create a new joint health formula that meets and exceeds pet owners’ expectations.

When it Comes to Glucosamine, Stability is Key

When choosing between glucosamine hydrochloride and glucosamine sulfate ingredients, the deciding factor is stability. Glucosamine hydrochloride is, by far, more stable than the sulfate equivalent, which often requires the addition of sodium or potassium chloride to enhance stability. With this in mind, we single-source our glucosamine products to ensure 99%+ purity.

Glucosamine demonstrates a “more is better” principle when it comes to appropriate dosages to support joint health. Typically ______ mg glucosamine HCl for a 50 kg animal, or ______ mg per day for a 100 kg animal, will exhibit joint health support within ___ weeks.

McCarthy G, et al. “Randomised double-blind, positive-controlled trial to assess the efficacy of glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate for the treatment of dogs with osteoarthritis.” The Veterinary Journal. 2007 July 174:1; 54-61.
